പഴശ്ശിരാജ (1755-1805)
കേരള സിംഹം എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന കേരള വര്മ പഴശ്ശിരാജയുടെ ജനനം 1755-ല് ആണെന്ന് കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു. വടക്കന് കോട്ടയം രാജകുടുംബത്തിലെ അംഗമായിരുന്നു. 1780-ല് ടിപ്പു സുല്‍ത്താനും ഹൈദരാലിക്കും എതിരെ ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാരെ സഹായിച്ചു. പിന്നീട് ഇങ്ങളീഷുകാര്‍ അവഗനിച്ചതോടെ അവരുമായി അഭിപ്റായ ഭിന്നതയിലായി. നികുതി പിരിവിന്റെയും പാട്ടവകാശത്തിന്റെയും പേരില്‍
ഇങ്ങളീഷുകാരുമായി സമരത്തിലായി.1793-1797 കാലഘട്ടത്തിനെ ഒന്നാം
പഴശ്ശി വിപ്ളവം എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. പുരളി മല കേന്ദ്രീകരിച് ആയിരുന്നു
വിപ്ളവം.
ചിറക്കല്‍ രാജാവിന്റെ മധ്യസ്ഥതയിലാണ്‍ ഇത് അവസാനിച്ചത്.
പിന്നീട് 1800-1805 നും ഇടയ്ക്കുണ്ടായ കലാപത്തെ രണ്ടാം
പഴശ്ശി വിപ്ളവം എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.
ഈ കലാപത്തിന്റെ അന്ത്യത്തില്‍ 1805 നവംബര്‍ 30-ന് പഴശ്ശിരാജ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടു. വയനാട്ടിലെ മാനന്തവാടിയിലാണ്‍ പഴശ്ശി കുടീരം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. പഴശ്ശിരാജ മിഉസിയം കോഴിക്കോട് ആണ്‍
സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്.

കേരള സിംഹം എന്നു വിശേഷിപ്പിച്ചത് സര്‍ദാര്‍ കെ.എം പണിക്കരുടെ പറങ്കിപ്പടയാളി എന്ന പുസ്തകത്തിലാണ്.
The article provides a detailed account of Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja, also known as the "Kerala Lion," born in 1755, who fiercely fought against British colonial forces in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. A member of the northern Kottayam royal family, Pazhassi Raja initially supported Tipu Sultan and Haidar Ali against the British but later turned against them due to unjust tax policies and feudal rights disputes. His guerrilla warfare tactics during the two Pazhassi uprisings—especially between 1793 and 1797, and the second one from 1800 to 1805—are highlighted. Notably, Pazhassi Raja's ancestry is linked to the Chola dynasty from Thanjavur. In a recent historical discovery, a cave believed to have been used by him for guerrilla warfare during the second revolt was found in Cherambadi, Nilgiris. On 28-02-2025, Kochu Thampuratty Subha Varma, the great-granddaughter of Pazhassi Raja, along with her husband Dr. Kishore, visited the cave and named it Pazhassi's Cave, marking a significant moment in honoring the memory of this legendary freedom fighter.
